Switzerland's Healthcare

Did The Voters Reject National Healthcare?

A seminar/discussion presented by Dr. Claudia Chaufan, MD PhD

Physicians for a National Healthcare Program member and Associate Professor at UCSF

On September 28, 2014 Swiss citizens cast their votes via a referendum that would decide if Switzerland would adopt a National Single Payer System that would replace the multiple private insurers throughout the country. The result was an overwhelming NO, making it the second referendum for Single Payer Health Care to be defeated (Managed Care has also been defeated in the past via referendum). Supporters (and critics) of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) have argued that the ACA is a "version" of Swiss health care, and this referendum adds weight to their claim that single-payer can never be achieved in the U.S. – nor should it be.

With no changes to their system, Swiss citizens and residents will continue to navigate through a network of private insurers, featuring increasingly limited networks, higher deductibles, and other "trade-offs" to escalating costs to purchase affordable care. So why did the Swiss reject Single Payer? How similar is their system to the ACA? Do the Swiss actually like their current system?

In this seminar/discussion, we will discuss these and other questions, and briefly compare/contrast Swiss Health Care with the ACA to clarify usual misrepresentations about both systems. We will also discuss the implications of this vote for US supporters of Single Payer and how we can move from debate to action.

We look forward to an engaging evening!
