Senator Grills Insurance CEOs at Hearing

On September 22nd, the Senate Judiciary Committee called Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini and Anthem CEO Joseph Swedish to testify on the companies' proposed mergers with Cigna and Humana. While much of the testimony offered was critical of the move - former FTC official and management professor Leemore Dafney stated plainly that "there's no good evidence out there that scale is associated with lower premiums or improvements in plan quality" - Senator Al Franken was the one who really turned up the heat. Watch the CEOs squirm in our favorite clip from the day:

The mergers, which would reduce the number of major insurance companies from five to only three, will be reviewed by the Justice Department before the deals close later in 2016. You can speak up for patients by signing the petition asking U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch to block these deals and push for a single-payer system for all!
