Maternal Mortality in the United States: A Human Rights Failure With 99% of maternal deaths occurring in developing countries, it is too often assumed that maternal mortality is not a problem in wealthier countries. Yet, statistics released in September of 2010 by the United Nations place the United States 50th in the world for maternal mortality. The Health Care Crisis Grows While the 2010 Health Reform Shrinks Premiums are rising and coverage is shrinking a new norm is taking hold in America: "Unaffordable underinsurance." This month, the number of waivers granted to the Obama health law broke 1,000 protecting inadequate insurance plans. The expansion of health insurance to the uninsured is becoming a mirage. Single-payer healthcare, as proposed by HR 676, the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act, would do a lot towards ending state fiscal crises across the US and will put an end to ever-increasing healthcare costs.
