Health Care Justice: Lessons from Taiwan

Taiwan is a capitalist economy where people value choice, freedom and competition. This is why, back in 1995, confronted with a staggering 43% of the population uninsured, medical bankruptcies, and rising health care costs, they decided that the best solution was a national, publicly funded Medicare for All system, where the people would contribute according to their individual ability to pay, and would receive services according to their medical needs. Today, National Health Insurance in Taiwan offers a comprehensive package of medical services, with fully free choice of doctors, and virtually no waiting lines. With a satisfaction rate consistently close to 80%, the Taiwanese have made it politically unfeasible for politicians to challenge this system. We invite you to learn from the Taiwanese experience and what lessons can be drawn for the United States.
